摘要

Disability is not solely identified by impairment. It is a way of thinking-a social construct-that has largely been shaped through history. Designing Disability: Symbols, Space, and Society is a deeply researched case study, written by Elizabeth Guffey, that details the development of access for the disabled as an idea alongside the simultaneous emergence of the International Symbol of Access (ISA). The book is as much about society's progress with perceiving and accepting disability as it is about the design of a universally recognized symbol-serving not only as a signpost for access in the built environment but also as a form of identity for the disabled community. Guffey takes the reader on a journey through the invention of the wheelchair, the emergence of barrier-free architecture, the development and eventual widespread use of the International Symbol of Access and the current conversations questioning the symbol's impact on society.
