Validity of 10 Hz Global Positioning System Devices to Measure Performance in an Incremental Cardiovascular Field Test

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the validity of a global positioning system (GPS) device sampling at 10 Hz to measure the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1 (YYIR1) in match officials. Methods: Thirty-three Spanish national soccer referees who belonged to the Committee of Soccer Referees from Navarre (Spain) participated in this investigation. They performed the YYIR1 at the same time in an athletic track. Both, theoretical distance covered and distance measured by GPS during the YYIR1 test were registered. Also VO_(2max) was estimated (VO_(2max)E). Results: Small differences (ES = 0.35, p < 0.05) were found between theoretical and GPS distance and VO2_(max)E. The value of CV and SEM was 9 ± 5% and 6.85% for the distance covered and 3 ± 2% and 1.95% for VO2_(max)E, respectively. A nearly perfect relationship (r = 0.96) and high ICC (0.89) were found, between theoretical and GPS distances in YYIR1. Conclusion: GPS device MinimaxX v2.5 operating at 10 Hz is valid to measure the YYIR1 in match officials.
