This chapter explores the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other information technology solutions for managing lifecycle information in support of operating and maintaining a facility. BIM is a process that inherently increases the ability to collaborate and exchange information throughout a project's lifecycle from its conception through design, construction, facility management, and decommissioning. Its actual use, however, still leaves different phases of the facility lifecycle disconnected and fragmented. This fragmentation leads to inefficiencies at different levels throughout the lifecycle. The identified inefficiency and disconnect discussed in this chapter is between the facility management phases and those phases prior in the lifecycle. This chapter explores the different research initiatives that promote better information exchange to support facility management activities. A healthcare facility information management framework is highlighted in more detail as an example of where BIM is moving to support facility information management.
