The development of rural spaces is an important policy field of the European Union. Development perspectives for different categories of rural areas are examined against the background of globalization and liberalization of world trade as well as the eastern expansion of the European Union. The agrarian sector in its multifunctional role is still a significant factor of a euro-pean strategy for rural development. On the basis of the principle of an integrated rural regional development as the central element of an european policy for rural regions the national implementation instruments with an agrarian structural orientation, especially Agrarian Structural Development Planning, Land Consolidation and Village Renewal Programme, have to be developed further.%Die Entwicklung des ländlichen Raums ist ein wichtiges Politikfeld der Europäischen Union. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Globalisierung und Liberalisierung des Welthandels sowie der EU-Osterweiterung werden die Entwicklungsperspektiven für verschiedene Kategorien ländlicher Räume betrachtet. Bedeutsamer Faktor einer europäischen Strategie zur ländlichen Entwicklung ist nach wie vor die Land- und Forstwirtschaft in einer multifunktionalen Rolle. Nach dem Prinzip der integrierten ländlichen Entwicklung als Kernelement einer europäischen Politik für den ländlichen Raum sind die nationalen Vollzugsinstrumente mit agrarstruktureller Ausrichtung, insbesondere die Agrar-strukturelle Entwicklungsplanung, die Flurbereinigung und die Dorferneuerung, fortzuentwickeln.
