Succession investigations of vegetated mine dump covers in the former uranium mining district of eastern thuringia

In-situ remediation of mine dumps which orig- inated from previous uranium mining in the Ronneburg area of Eastern Thuringia necessitates placement of covers in order to minimize radon emissions from the radioactive mine waste and infiltration of precipitation(Wismut, 1994). Furthermore the cover needs vegetation to provide erosion protection and an optimal water balance. In exam- ple of the dump Beerwalde(Thuringia, county Altenburger Land)in was possible to study the succession and the influ- Ence of vegetation on long term stability of heap covers.
