Colonial Memory and Postcolonial Europe: Maltese Settlers in Algeria and France

In France the last few decades have seen an increasing realisation that French colonial history had been neglected in traditional historiography, as well as official and popular discourse, and that the impact of colonial history on crucial aspects of contemporary French society-such as 'national identity', ethnicity and inclusion/exclusion-needs to be highlighted and considered in more depth. Andrea Smith's work is a timely contribution and welcome addition to this wider project.
