Turkey's accession process with the European Union (EU) has been a long and a difficult journey spanning several decades. However, it is only in the past decade that the process has significantly accelerated and Turkey's candidacy for EU membership has become a realistic prospect. Frequently criticised for dragging its feet and not doing enough to meet the criteria of membership, Turkey has often argued that it is being treated unfairly by the EU. Understanding the intricacies of Turkish accession to the EU is not always an easy task and lack of knowledge and stereotypes about Turkey can significantly hinder us from gaining a clearer insight into the internal dynamics of the Turkish Republic.
