The Nordic Model: Scandinavia since 1945

The Nordic Model has long been debated among social scientists and policy-akers worldwide. The political left see it as evidence that social democracy can simultaneously achieve social justice and economic efficiency. Conservatives criticise the Nordic model for stifling economic prosperity through over-regulation and high taxes. Social democracy has been facing a period of introspection due to globalisation, economic stagnation and the consequent increased support for neo-liberalism. Denmark and Norway have had centre-right governing coalitions since 2001, Finland since 2003 and Sweden since 2006. Iceland has traditionally been more right leaning.
