East German Intelligence. Myth, Reality and Controversy

Recent decades have witnessed the emergence of a plethora of works aimed at investigating the East German Ministry for State Security (MfS). Much of this work has been focused on the Stasi's role in domestic surveillance and the suppression of internal dissent, leaving other aspects of the organization's history largely unexamined. This latest volume from Routledge's 'Studies in Intelligence Series' seeks to close one of these important historiographical gaps through an examination of the activities of Hauptverwaltung A (HV A), the MfS's foreign intelligence service.
