It is somewhat challenging for Polish scholars that the most intriguing critical accounts on the Polish transformation have recently been written by outsiders. David Ost with his The Defeat of Solidarity (2005) and Elizabeth C. Dunn with Privatizing Poland (2004) succeeded in highlighting the serious consequences of Poland choosing the neoliberal path two decades ago, as they question Poland's success story measured usually in purely monetary terms or the growth in consumption rates.
