At first glance this book might appear as a cheap attempt at culture-bashing. It is an English language translation by Andrew Brown of the 2008 French book, originally published under the title Que reste-t-il de la culture frangaise ? Very much a book of two halves, it is co-authored in the sense that the second half by Antoine Compagnon-Professor of French Literature at the College de France and Blanche W. Knopf Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, comprises forty-four pages (plus notes)-and written in direct response to the first half (eighty-two pages) by Donald Morrison, former editor of Time magazine's European and Asian editions.
