Feminist Security Studies: A Narrative Approach

In Feminist Security Studies: A Narrative Approach, Annick Wibben goes beyond the tired debates about expanding versus contracting the definition of security by pointing to the epistemological and methodological limits of security studies as a field. Through a discussion of the genesis of the field and its foundations, Wibben illustrates the blind and 'deaf spots of security studies, as well as the potential for feminist thought to reshape and redirect the future of security studies. Wibben makes clear that she is not interested in simply injecting feminist perspectives into current debates and perspectives within security studies. Rather, she sees particular feminist approaches to security-what she calls Feminist Security Studies (FSS)-as having the potential of dramatically 'opening the agenda ... [and] to begin by understanding how security has traditionally worked and how meanings of security are fixed in certain narratives that make up security studies' (p. 6).
