This volume is probably best described as a handbook in that it provides a broad overview of its chosen field and principally presents research in the area. What it is not is a conventional edited book, in that the editors not only provide the Introduction but also make major contributions either singly or jointly to all its sections. In fact, they contribute the whole of the first and final sections and have a major role in the remaining section entitled 'Fields of Research and Action of Sustainability Science and Policy', which makes up about half of the volume.
