This book was first written between 1992 and 1995 and published in 1997, when the euro was introduced as a currency (ⅹⅱ). However, as John Bellany Foster highlights in the foreword, many of Samir Amin's observations in this volume remain crucially relevant today (ⅹⅲ). This book is structured in seven chapters. After Amin outlines the chapters in the Introduction, Chapter 1 puts the subject into perspective. It reviews the revolution path of the capitalist mode of production all the way from 1500 to the present day; discusses the present world system and its components; introduces the 'Project of Globalisation', the EU's 'European Project' and its obstacles; and it also sketches out its possible future scenarios.
