摘要

In his study on interzones and imaginative communities in film and European societies, Film and German Studies scholar Randall Halle uses a broad comparative and historical approach to recognize 'the relationship of the cinematic apparatus to the social configuration unfolding in Europe and beyond'. He sets out to correct and revise earlier research on transnationalism by rejecting the neo-Hegelian assumption which largely informs much of the academic work on transnationalism in Europe. He argues that cinema plays a crucial role in generating 'interzones' in which the imaginative communities of the new Europe (after the 1990s collapse of state-communism) meet themselves for the first time. In due course, Halle demonstrates that European cinema both creates and mirrors these imaginative communities-supported by the European Union's networks of 'cultural interzones', film industry and professional cooperation.
