Professor English's book purports to be a history of terrorism, which it patently is not. By most estimates, in the modem era Maximillian Robespierre and his collaborators could be said to have launched'the reign of terror'in 1793; the very point at which the term'terrorism'was invented and thus showing the dissidents of the world how it should be done: but the reader will find no mention of him in this volume, nor of many more heinous acts of barbarism perpetrated in the name of numerous causes, ideals, religiousfanaticism and political objectives. This is not surprising since the UN list of recognised terror groups across the world is many hundreds of names long.
