%Many species of animals including jewel beetle and peacock have brilliant structural color. These colors are produced by optical phenomena caused by microstructure of submicron size. Various forms of the microstructures have been reported so far, ranging from a simple thin-layer to a three-dimensional periodic network. This article considers the multilayered thin-film structure that is most commonly found in structural color in nature. While the multilayer structure is applied in artificial thin-film optics, animals also utilize it to produce their brilliant colors.
