Filling the gaps in undergraduate teaching of clinical biochemistry

Inadequate education in pathology should be seen as a patient safety issue. It cannot be beneficial for patients when the doctors dealing with their basic fluid and electrolyte maintenance are not confident about what they are doing. As scholars and scientists, doctors must understand the scientific basics of what they are about, pathology should no longer be neglected in the undergraduate curriculum.rnA major factor must to be to raise the profile of pathology in medical schools. Raising the profile of pathology and especially reversing the decline in academic pathology are major objectives of the Royal College of Pathologists. Pathologists need to be present among the academic voices to combat pressure to reduce the pathology content of medical courses. This also means being present in medical education departments where increasingly these decisions are being made. However, pathologists need to emphasise to their medical schools the explicit outcomes as identified by the GMC for the next generation of medical students to be scholars and scientists.
