Scatter and Statistical Analysis of Fatigue Crack Growth Data

Recognizing the scatter phenomenon in fatigue crack growth, researchers have been proposing different probabilistic models to analyze the subject. These models, however, either lack experimental verification or are only supported by a particular data set (but not others). More experimental data sets are therefore needed to validate the models. In the present paper, some newly obtained experimental data in the study of fatigue crack growth under random loading are presented. Statistical analysis of the data is performed and the results are presented. The scatter of the experimental data is, in particular, discussed and compared with those of other available data sets. Conclusions are drawn and comments are offered at the end of the paper. These conclusions and comments are useful for researchers to verify or modify their probabilistic models that are related to the reliability analysis of components when fatigue or fracture failure is considered.
