Abrasion resistance of concrete containing surface cracks

This study evaluates concrete resistance of concrete specimens with abrasion in three crack patterns (0°, 45° and 90°), four surface crack widths (0.5, 1, 2 and 3 mm) and two silica fume (5% and 10%) contents. The ASTM C 944 was used to evaluate the abrasion resistance. The boundary element method (BEM) was used to analyze the stress distribution on concrete surfaces with/without cracks. Test results conclude that the abrasion resistance of test specimens containing 0°, 45° and 90° cracks and 1 mm crack widths showed a decrease of about 98%, 108% and 125%, respectively, as compared to specimen without cracks. The abrasion resistance loss of concrete with 90° cracks is lower than concrete with 0° cracks that have the same width and length. Moreover, concrete with silica fume additions can improve the abrasive resistance of specimens with surface cracks.
