Most of us know Professor D. L. Massart, one of the great pioneers of chemometrics. This text is a presentation of his laboratory and the group around him. The interviews were made in the spring of 1995, so some of the material may be a little outdated when it appears in print. The laboratory is situated at the Campus of the Free University of Brussels (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, VUB) and more specifically in the part called University Hospital. The location is inside the ring around Brussels and towards the north of the city. The university situation of Brussels is quite unique. There are two free universities, one for the French-speaking side and one for the Dutch-speaking (Flemish) side. The French-speaking part is called Universit6 Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Co-operation between the two universities is very good, but for political reasons they are considered completely separate in every way. The VUB has 6000-7000 students and all types of studies and diplomas except theology are offered.
