The mysterious destruction of the gigantic German Blohm & Voss transatlantic-range BV 238-V1 flying boat by Hawker Typhoon fighter-bombers in Aprill945 continues to fascinate aviation historians, artists and admirers on the Internet to this day. Unfortunately, much of the published information is largely based on incomplete knowledge or wishful thinking, mostly among American writers. Development of the BV 238 goes back to 1937 when Lufthansa, commissioned Blohm & Voss to construct three long-range flying boat prototypes capable of offering superior comfort for passengers on its transatlantic services linking Berlin and New York via Hamburg.
