In the December 2008 Journal, we discussed some of the problems facing the audio community in the allocation of spectrum for wireless mics and "television band devices," also known as TVBDs or "white space" devices. To date, there are no white space devices or systems in production; in fact the database required for their operation is still undefined. The issue opened the door, however, for discussions on the more specific problem of wireless microphone use in theaters, churches, sporting events, and other places by people who aren't broadcasters or movie producers and are therefore ineligible for UHF licenses.
