Placing architecture-archiving place: from conversations with Malgorzata Wagner

Situated in a block of flats built in 1905, the Karol Tchorek Sculpture Studio at 36, Smolna Street, is located in one of the most prominent parts of Warsaw, next to the Royal Route and the National Museum. Karol Tchorek's decision to establish his studio in the back building of a tenement destroyed by a bomb blast during World War II was deliberate. It allowed him to create a space that both fulfilledrnfunctional needs and embodied his idea of a creative workspace. The place was also hidden away from possible contest over usable space. The entire studio was designed and built from ruins by Karol Tchorek himself in the years 1950-51.
