摘要

No work is so socially necessary as building construction … build the towns and cities of the future so that in worth and ordered architectural dignity and beauty they will surpass those built in the past. These words were written in 1949, not by an architect but a trade unionist, Luke Fawcett, General Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers. His exhortation on the intimate relationship between society and the production of the built environment comes at the end of Christine Wall's An Architecture of Parts: Architects, Building Workers and Industrialisation 1940-1970. It also finds an echo at the beginning of Architecture and the Welfare State, where the editors Mark Swenar-ton, Tom Avermaete and Dirk van den Heuvel dwell on the central importance of the production of architecture and space to the redistribution of wealth that defined the Welfare State.
