Binding space: the book as spatial practice

Marian Macken's recent book provides a very welcome introduction to, manifesto for, survey of and demonstration concerning the role of books-or more precisely the artist's book-as an extension of architectural practice. Part of the 'Design Research in Architecture' series, it presents a rigorous pursuit of research methodologies derived from architecture's own palette. According to the book's back-cover blurb, it 'explores the role of the book form within the realm of architectural representation. It proposes the book itself as another three-dimensional, complementary architectural representation with a generational and propositional role within the design process'.
