While urban design is increasingly being taught within planning, urban studies, landscape architecture, and architecture programs, there seems to be a scarcity of good introductory textbooks that combine both conceptual and practical material. To be sure, there are good and often demanding readers on theory, such as The Urban Design Reader (Larice and Macdonald, 2007). There are excellent volumes of professional standards, such as Planning and Urban Design Standards (APA, 2006). There are beloved but aged classics, such as Kevin Lynch's (1981) GoodCityForm and Edmund Bacon's (1967) Design of Cities. And there are valuable but less-than-comprehensive works by a few others. However, there seems to be a need for a readable, authoritative, and well-illustrated volume that can help students understand conceptual issues regarding urban design, practical strategies for working with other professionals and the public, and creative techniques for producing good designs.
