What constitutes a cartography of modernism? And what does such a cartography produce? Esra Akcan's Architecture in Translation: Germany, Turkey and the Modern House provides one answer to these questions while charting German-Turkish relations in architecture, and surveying the built environment of modernism with a focus on houses, housing, and settlements. Throughout the book, "translation" is treated as a metaphor for describing and articulating uneven development and unequal exchanges between cultures in modernism. Akcan establishes a vocabulary that distinguishes hybridity from translation.
