Treatment of immature scars after plastic surgery using a two-wavelength vascular laser

Background and Objective: The aesthetic resultand patient satisfaction with plastic surgeryis largely determined by the condition of thepostoperative scars. Early laser treatment isaimed at solving the problem at the beginningof its development and preventing the formationof a full-blown pathological scar. The aim ofthe study was to evaluate the results achievedwith early laser treating immature post-surgicalscars with excessive activity of fibro-proliferativeprocesses using two-wavelengths vascularlaser system Nd:YAP/KTP with laser radiationgeneration of 1079 and 540 nm. Materials andMethods: This prospective pilot clinical studyincluded 18 patients with immature scars witha tendency to hypertrophy after plastic surgeryon the face and body. Laser treatment was carriedout using a two-wavelength vascular laser systemNd:YAP/KTP with laser radiation generation of1079 and 540 nm. Each patient underwent threelaser sessions. The treatment effectiveness wasassessed by the value of dynamics POSAS, DLQIand evaluation of the ultrasound images of scarsbefore and 2 weeks after the third treatmentsession. Side effects and potential complicationswere recorded at each visit. Results: All patientsof study group reported good improvement andexpressed their satisfaction with the treatment.PSOAS and DLQI scores decreased significantly atthe end of the study, reflecting an improvementin the condition of the postoperative scars andpatient’s quality of life. Moreover, ultrasoundanalysis revealed an decrease in dermal thickness(P < 0.01) and increase echogenicity of scar tissue. No complications or undesirable side effectswere reported during this study. Conclusion:The use of a two-wavelenghts laser systemNd:YAP/ KTP (1079/540 nm) in the early stagesof an immature post-surgery scar showed highefficiency in improving the appearance of thescar, a preventing its subsequent growth, lack ofnegative effects.
