As one of the most promising candidate materials for nonvolatilenferroelectric memories, lanthanide-doped bismuth titanaten[Bi4 xLnxTi3O12 (BLnT)] thin films have currently attracted tre-nmendous interest. BLnT consists of a layered structure of (Bi2O2)n2nand (Bi2Ti3O10)n2npseudoperovskite layers stacked along the c-axisndirection. The lanthanide ions can substitute for the Bi ions in thenpseudoperovskite layer and thus enhance the ferroelectric properties.nOn the other hand, BLnT thin films also show excellent opticalnproperties. For example, Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 thin films exhibit remark-nable optical nonlinearity,n1nand (Bi,Eu)4Ti3O12 (BEuT) thin filmsnshow the red photoluminescence (PL) properties of Eu3nions. Innparticular, the PL properties of BEuT thin films might have potentialnapplications for integrated photoluminescent ferroelectric thin-filmndevices.n2nHowever, further enhancement of the emission intensitynof BEuT is desirable.
