The global crisis: A unique opportunity to reconsider aviation policy at European and national levels

These are very difficult times for European aviation. For the first time in years, traffic growth has come to a halt, reflecting one of the worst economic crises in modern times. Month after month since last September, passenger and freight traffic has continuously and steadily decreased at European airports, with all markets affected. The latest ACI EUROPE quarterly figures for the period January-March 2009 reported a drop of more than 12 per cent for passenger traffic, and of more than 23 per cent for freight traffic. At the moment, close to 90 per cent of European airports are losing traffic. Trends for April and May do not report any real traffic recovery.
