RNP: Air Transportation System Silver Bullet

In November 2002, The Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry's final report recommended the transformation of U.S. air transportation system as a national priority. As a result of this recommendation, Congress and the Administration created a multi-agency Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) to develop a National Plan to transform our air transportation system. But, while the nation works to develop the National Plan, FAA has taken action to implement a concept that underlies other transformation efforts: RNP (Required Navigation Performance). RNP is one of many silver bullets that will enable air transportation's future. In this article I will use the words of the Aerospace Commission to highlight the importance of the actions of the FAA and the aviation community to put in place the foundation for aviation's future.
