When AFPs have been implemented at the capacity-constrained MMSD and MMUN airports, they have reduced the need for MIT and MINIT restrictions. These reductions have occurred despite constant or increasing traffic to these airports. This application was not anticipated at the time the AFP concept was developed, and represents an additional benefit of AFP technology beyond their planned use during severe weather events. In addition, AFPs have resulted in increased airspace capacity by providing well-spaced, orderly traffic flows. As traffic managers continue to use AFPs, it is expected that such novel AFP applications will continue to grow, providing additional benefits to the NAS.
