Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS) has become the collective goal of many organizations and the focus of two collaborative workshops initiated and chartered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)'s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Office. Two caucuses of workshops comprised of collision avoidance experts from the FAA, NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense (Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps), Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Lincoln Laboratory (MITLL), the MITRE Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (MITRE/ CAASD), and various UAS industry representatives analyzed and documented the issues of see and avoid as applied to unmanned aircraft. The First Caucus of workshops included direct UAS industry participation while the Second Caucus received industry feedback via RTCA Special Committee 203 (SC-203). Each caucus included several rounds of meetings and continuing dialogue to complete its objectives. The participant list for the Second Caucus is listed in Table 1. The source material presented herein represents the consensus of the workshops.
