MH370 After Five Years, What's Next?

Despite the most extensive search in aviation history and the near-doubling of the underwater search area by Ocean Infinity, the disappearance of MH370 remains a mystery both in terms of the cause of the disappearance and the aircraft's resting location. What is almost certain, though, is that the aircraft deviated from its filed flight path under manual control and crashed, following fuel exhaustion, in the southern Indian Ocean. This means that the aircraft wreckage lies somewhere within the "Wide Search Area," as shown in Figure 2.
