Kate Adams, Coordinator for Distance, Graduate, and Undergraduate Services at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, wanted to know how others handle the situation when a distance education student is not enrolled but needs to finish an incomplete. How do they get around licensing restrictions for databases and online journals? One answer was that after confirming that the student really does need to make up an incomplete, then they grant access for a semester. If the instructor asks, they will extend it even beyond a semester. Two distance ed posters explained that at their shop, the matter was addressed by a college-wide policy. The Registrar's Office changed the students' status to "enrolled" or the equivalent. In the case of a graduate student finishing a thesis or dissertation, there was a $50 charge for changing a student's status to "continuing graduate student." The poster further noted that the graduate student's advisor played a key role. In discussing the thesis question, several more posters explained that they had a 1-hr "course" that the student must register for. This ensured that a student really was enrolled but had only the small expense of a single hour's credit.
