Library staff may be considered an asset second only to library collections. In current economic times and with library trends toward access rather than ownership, I would contend that staff may now have surpassed collections in their value. Library staff broker consortial deals, negotiate contracts for licensed online resources, make and keep things discoverable, and assist patrons directly with their information needs. The current changing library climate makes staff development an even more essential activity for all libraries. In her book, Staff Development on a Shoestring: A How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians, Marcia Trotta looks at all aspects of professional development and the resources available to libraries in consideration of the current economic conditions.
