Implementation of the Modified Minnesota Detoxification Scale (mMINDS) for Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome in Critically Ill Patients

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a common con-dition in the ICU that is associated with worsened out-comes. 1 , 2 Management of AWS often relies on scoring tools to determine the need for symptomatic treatment with benzodiazepines. 3 The commonly used revised Clin-ical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol (CIWA-Ar) scale requires patients to answer subjective questions re-garding their symptoms, which may be impossible in crit-ically ill patients. 4 The modified Minnesota Detoxifica-tion Scale (mMINDS) has been successfully used for AWS treatment in the ICU. 5 The mMINDS is summarized in Table 1 .
