Collection of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Data on the Front Lines of Health Care: More Than Meets the Eye

In the movie Contact based on the Carl Sagan novel of the same name, an alien message is received on Earth that contains the instructions to build a machine that appears to be some sort of transport device, the purpose and function of which are unknown. The nations of the world come together to form a consortium that manufactures the machine and prepares to send a human on a journey in the machine. The efforts face debate about the importance, cost, and safety of this undertaking, as well as sabotage by reactionaries who are in opposition to such progressive efforts. In the end a journey is made, but the experiences of Jodi Foster’s character who makes the journey, Dr. Ellie Arroway, cannot be externally validated. In the end a congressional hearing determines that her reported experience was the result of a complex hoax, and the program is scrapped. Later, in private, Dr. Arroway is given a large grant to continue her work, as evidence is subsequently found to support her claims.
