The Association between the Electronic Health Record and Patient-Reported Receipt of Tobacco Cessation Care in Hospitalized Veterans

To the Editor: The Joint Commission implemented its tobacco treatment (TOB) measures as ORYX® measures to encourage evidence-based tobacco cessation care on the basis of the documented effectiveness of combined counseling and pharmacotherapy during and after hospitalization to increase tobacco abstinence. In January 2014 the Veterans Health Administration of the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) selected three of the tobacco measures for its ongoing quality improvement efforts in hospitalized patients (Table 1). These measures are satisfied by tobacco treatment being offered (which considers refusal) and tobacco treatment provided.
