Professor K. C. Nicolaou*

K. C. Nicolaou was born on July 5, 1946 in Cyprus, where hengrew up and went to school until the age of 18. In 1964,nhe emigrated to England where he spent two years learningnEnglish and preparing to enter university. His advanced studiesnin chemistry were carried out at the University of Londonn(B.Sc., 1969, Bedford College, First Class Honors; Ph.D.n1972, University College, with Professors F. Sondheimer andnP. J. Garratt). In 1972, he crossed the Atlantic to the UnitednStates and completed postdoctoral appointments at ColumbianUniversity (1972–1973, Professor T. J. Katz) and HarvardnUniversity (1973–1976, Professor E. J. Corey) after which henjoined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, wherenhe rose through the ranks to become the Rhodes-ThompsonnProfessor of Chemistry. In 1989, he accepted joint appointmentsnat the University of California, San Diego, where he isnProfessor of Chemistry, and The Scripps Research Institute,nwhere he is the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry andnholds the Darlene Shiley Professor Chair in Chemistry and isnalso the Aline. W. and L. Skaggs Professor of Chemical Biology.
