Overview of the GV-E400 Series New Diesel-Electric Railcars (Mass-Production Prototype Cars)

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) decided to manufacture new diesel-electric railcars to replace the Kiha 40 series cars produced during the Japan National Railways era. Diesel-electric railcars run by their traction motors being driven by electric power produced by diesel engines and generators, which is a new system used by JR East. They target safe and reliable transportation as well as high-quality service, produced by feedback from technologies and maintenance methods gleaned from the production and operation of the many electric cars owned by our company. In this report, the GV-E400 series mass-production prototype cars for which performance evaluation studies have been conducted in the Niigata area are introduced.
