Japanese Internet service provider (ISP) So-Net has launched a commercial fiber broadband service with 2Gbps download speed and 1Gbps uplink in Tokyo and six surrounding districts - Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Kanagawa and Saitama. The company, which is 58% owned by Sony, is offering the network connection for JPY4, 980 (US$51) per month on a two-year contract, compared to the US$70 per month for Google's 1Gbps fiber-only package. So-net is currently waving the installation fee of JPY52, 500 for customers who apply for the service online.
