Detailed and precise knowledge of the land surface conditions is required as an essential and initial input for works on both the analysis or management of regional environmental resources, and the modeling or assessment of environmental impacts related to natural as well as to man-induced changes and hazards. Detailed and accurate land-use/land-cover maps are therefore of crucial importance. Nowadays, GIS (Geographical Information System) and satellite remote sensing technologies provide the best solution to scientific and social demands.
