The last 18 months have seen the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) accept two new vessels into its fleet. On 7 June 2019, the dual-role diving and hydrographic ship HMNZS Manawanui was commissioned at Devonport Naval base, Auckland. Acquired second-hand from commercial service following the cancellation of a planned new-build multi-purpose littoral operations vessel, Manawanui has since been modified to suit the specific needs of the RNZN's Littoral Warfare Unit (HMNZS Matataua).
