Damen secures contract for Germany's MKS180 project

Damen Shipyards Group has been confirmed as main contractor for the delivery of four new Mehrzweckkampfschiff 180 (MKS 180) multipurpose frigates to the German Navy. The design and construction contract, valued at approximately EUR4.6 billion (USD5.2 billion), was awarded by German's Bundesamt fur Ausrues-tung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) on 19 June. This followed the release of programme funding by the Bundestag budget committee two days previously. Dutch-owned Damen will deliver the MKS 180 programme in co-operation with Thales (mission system), Blohm + Voss, and Lurssen (the latter working in co-operation with Kiel-based German Naval Yards [GNY]).
