Maintaining stability: South American maritime presence supports Antarctic security

Like other regions around the world, Antarctica faces maritime security challenges. However, while such challenges may become more significant in the longer term, several factors are combining currently to maintain a level of stability in the security balance at sea. These factors include the operational issues inherent in the harsh environmental conditions, the robust security framework established under the 1961 Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), and maritime presence (for example, from South American countries).
