A UK industry consortium has been shortlisted alongside four overseas shipyards to bid for the UK's GBP1 billion (USD1.2 billion) Fleet Solid Stores (FSS) ship programme. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has indicated a firm requirement for two FSS vessels and an option for a third. The new vessels will be operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) and will replace the RFA's existing solid stores ships RFA Fort Austin and RFA Fort Rosalie (both commissioned in the late 1970s), and RFA Fort Victoria (commissioned in 1994). A contract award is planned for 2020, with the first ship to enter service in 2026.
