Legal challenges bring corvette procurement to a standstill

Romania's long-running plans to acquire a new class of multifunction corvette were paused at the start of 2019 amid allegations of irregularities in the procurement process. A decision is pending on the restart or potential annulment of the procurement procedure.The corvette acquisition programme was launched in March 2018, based on the Government Decision (G.D.) no. 48/2018. The first corvette is planned to be delivered within three years of contract, with the programme to be completed in seven years. The requirement calls for a 2,500-tonne class multipurpose ship with capabilities across anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-airwarfare, electronic warfare, naval gunfire support, and search and rescue. Aviation facilities are required to support an IAR 330 Puma 10-tonne helicopter and a shipborne unmanned air system.
