Israel firms up attack submarine deal

Germany has agreed to build and partially fund two additional attack submarines for the Israel Navy. A letter of intent was signed between the two governments for the estimated EUR1 billion (USD1.17 billion) contract on 21 November 2005. Under the agreement, the two diesel-electric submarines will be built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft and Thyssen Nordseewerke in Kiel, with Germany providing the funds for a third of the project. Israel is currently seeking US approval to finance another third under the foreign military funding programme and the last third will be funded through Israel's defence budget.
